FIELD - Field began with a walk. Wildflowers growing in a field near Rick Watters' home gave him something he hadn't expected, not a subject to paint, but a color logic to follow. Each panel in this collection starts with base colors drawn from those fields, then follows a strict internal rule about how color shifts across the surface, governed by the white and black foundations that divide each panel. The result is a body of work that feels both found and engineered, rooted in the visible world but resolved entirely in paint.
PINWHEEL - The Pinwheel collection is built on a single panel design, one unit, repeated and overlaid to produce compositions that walk the line between fine art and optical pattern. The goal was never pure pattern; it was to use the language of pattern as a vehicle for something bolder and more alive. Arrangements shift from hypnotic and meditative to urgent and kinetic, often within the same piece. Bold and playful like the rest of Watters' work, but more intricate in the way it rewards sustained looking.
DRIFT - Drift is the most ambitious collection in the series, four panel designs, each on two panels with different orientations, arranged and rearranged to see what would happen. The palette is unapologetically bold, the color combinations deliberately unlikely, and the spirit somewhere between the freedom of youth and the structure of adulthood. The result is a body of work that feels whimsical and thoughtful at the same time.
SPLASH - Splash is a reflection on personal transformation through trial and the dizzying array of excitement, uncertainty, bravery and sadness it can bring. Built using only four panels, this collection takes an organic spin on Pinwheel. What developed was unexpected, mesmerizing eye-candy.
PANEL STUDIES - Panel Studies began the way the whole body of work did, with individual panels, painted to stand on their own. Before the arrangements, before the compositions, there were single panels that needed to work as pieces in their own right. This collection returns to that starting point, pulling a deliberate handful of panels from across collections and letting them breathe on their own terms or in the company of just a few others. Stripped back to the essentials, the system reveals what it's made of.
